aka Island of the Twilight People
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Eddie Romero gets his trash-soaked hands on the old Dr. Moreau tale, placing the action in the Philippines (naturally) and casting John Ashley (naturally) as the somewhat bland hero. Here, Mr. Ashley is kidnapped by a mad doctor’s henchman whilst diving in the middle of the ocean but his history as a scholar, soldier of fortune and hunter gives him a slight edge over his captors. He falls for the doctor’s beautiful daughter (can’t say I blame him) and has his hands full thanks to the island’s other inhabitants. Dr. Gordon has been busy attempting to create a new race of animal/human hybrids to face the world’s troubling future head on. As it goes, the animal people are not the monsters, Dr. Gordon proves to be more dangerous with his psychosis disguised as benevolence and his milk-drinking number one man, the excellent Jan Merlin, seems to relish in the brutality the current situation on the island calls for. Ashley is set to be the shining achievement of Gordon’s work but shit changes when he manages to escape with the doctor’s daughter and a small group of specimens. The chase is on as “monsters” and monsters try to outlive each other. The creature makeup holds that cheap charm I love so damn much and gives us an all-time favorite in the bat-man. We also get Pam Grier as the panther woman and you’ll not hear one complaint from me. There’s no way around it, this is one hell of a fun time in the Filipino jungles.
