A little small town lore about a ventriloquist named Mary Shaw and her child-killing shenanigans sets the atmosphere for this flawed but unabashedly fun supernatural yarn from the team that birthed Saw. Local boy, Jamie Ashen, is forced to confront old demons after his wife is brutally murdered following the arrival of one of Shaw’s creepy-ass dummies to their apartment. He heads home for her funeral and, on top of dealing with a detective who likes him for the murder (a fuckin’ game Donnie Wahlberg) and the rocky relationship with his estranged father, he starts digging into the town’s twisted past... eventually encountering the evil spirit responsible for offing his wife. Seems Mary Shaw got her ass murdered after a heckling kid vanished and from that point on various town folk have been found posed for family photos with their tongues ripped out. Some creepy-ass scenes play out in all their spooky glory, the multi-tongued Mary Shaw is one hell of a cool phantom and Shaw’s waterlogged theater is a brilliant nightmare set piece. The lead is a bit flat and the muted colors bath everything in an annoying blue but it’s just minor issues in an otherwise enjoyable spook show.
