Demented (1980) (USA)

⭐️⭐️

Linda is gang-raped by a group of stocking-masked creeps in a sudden and nauseating (and thankfully short) pre-credits sequence. She ends up in a sanatorium due to the mental anguish of the assault. A few months pass and her doctor husband (Oh no, it’s Harry Reems) picks her up and the two hope to work through the awfulness and get on with their lives. Mentally unstable, Linda is also dealing with an unfaithful husband and some local teenage hoodlums hanging around and messing with her… or is it all in her head. The teens throw on some monster masks and start terrorizing Linda, with her husband constantly seeing his side piece, it’s pretty damn easy. Needless to say, Linda is cracking. Her younger sister comes to visit and the siblings try to out non-act each other. Linda pushes everyone away except her caring doctor (no, not her scuzzy husband) and eventually things get violent when she decides to fight back… or does she? Sallee Young is delightfully awful in the lead until eventually making you want to hammer nails into your ears, Harry Reems is perfectly sleazy until eventually making you want to hammer nails into your eyes and if you manage to make it to the climax without making yourself deaf and blind, things do manage to get entertaining. Linda dons some lingerie and does away with the masked jackasses creeping around her house. A Xanadu shirt, rape jokes, cleavage, unconvincing seduction, awkward dancing, a more awkward dinner and a wire castration (somehow pulled off without the removal of the dumb-fuck’s jeans) add to the stupid vibes. It all feels like it should be way more grimy than it is and comes off just a little too neutered to be anything above the usual garbage that old rape-revenge subgenre spits out. Chesty Sallee Young is memorable for all the wrong reasons and the final thirty minutes is worth your time.
