Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein (1972) (Spain/France)

aka Dracula vs Frankenstein/Screaming Dead

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Universal monster mash... Jess Franco style! The recently slain Count Dracula (Howard Vernon) is revived by Dr. Frankenstein (Dennis Price) with the intent of adding him to his “Army of Shadows” and using this army to achieve domination over man. Also on his team is his world famous monster and a physically handicapped pervert named Morpho. I’ve got a feeling the race of man is gonna be just fine. Dracula and his sexy lady vamps continue to do that blood sucking thing they do so well and Dr. Seward is tipped off that his vampiric enemy is no longer deceased. Seward is injured by Frankenstein’s monster and ends up in the care of a bitter gypsy woman. The gypsy summons a werewolf to help fight Frankenstein’s “army” and we get a rushed ending in the finest of Franco fashion. Like most of Franco’s output, it’s best not to ask why and just role with the fun. Howard Vernon gives one of his most zoned out performances and it is sadly easy to tell that Dennis Price is nearing the end of his life. There’s plenty of buzzing and flashing lab equipment and laughably bad makeup. Franco’s penchant for unnecessary camera shots and focus issues is in full swing and it lends an air of much appreciated off-kilterness to the whole ordeal.
