Naschy-led period piece involves a desperate French baron (Barón Gilles de Lancré played by a super dashing Paul) looking to expand his power and regretfully turning to the dark arts to do it. Under the guidance of an alchemist, the baron learns he can continue his scientific work with the heavy cost of Virgin sacrifice and oppression. He just needs to get his hands on that pesky Philosopher’s Stone. His super hot lady love (jaw-dropper Norma Sebre) encourages such bad behavior because she is all about power. Not that he really needs much of a push, looks like the necromancer and the super sexy baroness are in cahoots and manipulating the once noble man. Madness and possible possession are a dangerous mix. An old war buddy of the baron arrives and discovers his friend has become an evil scumbag, which has him joining up with the oppressed people to revolt once he turns down his old friend’s offer to join him in glory. The baroness sees the former soldier as a threat and wants him dead. So there’s plenty of swordplay this time around but a real lack of the supernatural tomfoolery I like in my Naschy flicks. There’s a torture chamber and our boy’s hair is fucking stellar, like a beautiful helmet of suaveness. It’s kind of Robin Hood with Devil worship but nowhere near as entertaining as that sounds. Naschy does wear an eyepatch after a jousting accident and it’s a solid look for the man… he really could wear anything.
