Downstairs (2014) (USA)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

A post-it note left on a computer warns a night guard to not go into the basement. Considering that in the opening scene of this short film we saw a man finally take the advice of the harsh, whispering disembodied voices and hang himself… he probably should listen. Flip Schubbers gets curious and discovers that the pretentious, rude tenants of the building he’s working in are the least of his worries. A genuinely creepy specter haunts the shadows (and the quick edits), leaving an awful odor and seeming to coax Flip into the building’s basement. Really should have taken the advice on the post-it note. Boasting some nice old school chills and a completely likable lead in Sam Boxleitner as the night guard in for one hell of a shift, Downstairs makes the most of its nearly twenty minute runtime. Spookiness and comedy combine well for Lee Boxleitner’s quick slice of shadow-infused creeps.
