V/H/S: Viral (2014) (USA/Spain)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of those insufferable social media fame-obsessed ass-clowns starts filming a police chase to get himself some views. Shit gets serious when his girlfriend ends up trapped in some bizarre social media netherworld thanks to the malevolent ice cream truck alluding the police and bringing about the apocalypse (or some shit). As opposed to the previous entries where tape watching gives us our loose reasoning, segments randomly play out. In Dante the Great a magician gets his hands on an actual magical cloak and uses it to get up to no good. In a bargain for the fame he’s experiencing, Dante has to keep the cloak well fed and this piece of clothing feeds on humans. Dante’s assistants start vanishing and things keep escalating. Justin Welborn is great as the somewhat sleazy magician with an ego and a lack of morals and the idea behind it is kind of fun. The finale is a silly blast. Parallel Monsters sees an inventor successfully access a parallel dimension and meet himself. They swap universes for 15 minutes and the dude from our reality quickly realizes the universe right next to his has gone to hell. Another kinda fun one but, just like the previous segment, it’s a little forgettable and that should never be the case when your film involves demonic penises. Bonestorm is a frantic bit of fun where a couple slightly annoying but somehow likable skateboarders don some GoPros and get filmed by some asshole they hired. They skate a ditch in Tijuana and get chased by some strange cult of killer face-painted weirdos and robe-wearing skeletons. All hell breaks loose and we actually get a memorable bit of horror. “Yo! Do crackheads have fire blood?” The wraparound Vicious Circles unfortunately gets a bunch of time and is far less interesting than anything else that makes its way onto the screen, it also veers off into a dumb-as-fuck bit at a bbq which I’m still scratching my head about and a revenge porn revenge thing that completely blows.
