V/H/S/2 (2013) (USA/Canada/Indonesia)

aka S-VHS

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Two private investigators search for a missing college student and find a bunch of vhs tapes when they break into his house. They start watching them and, as we’ve seen with the first entry, some bad shit starts going down once the tapes start getting watched. In Phase I Clinical Trials, an eye transplant allows some poor sap (Adam Wingard) to start seeing ghosts and since it’s all being recorded from his new eye, we get to see them as well. It’s mostly jump scares but they’re well-orchestrated and we do get some bewbs… so I’ll place it in the win category. A Ride in the Park offers a nice little spin on a familiar genre when a GoPro allows us to get a POV look at the beginnings of a zombie outbreak and it’s a bit funnier and sadder than you’d think. Safe Haven follows a film crew doing a piece focusing on a cult apparently on the eve of ascension to another plain of existence. They follow the possibly insane leader to his commune and it all goes to hell in the best way possible... ya know, literally. Mass suicide leads to murder, zombies and the birth of a goat-headed antichrist in a completely balls-to-the-walls outings that absolutely makes this film worth seeking out. Slumber Party Alien Abduction is exactly what it sounds like. Some preteens film their sleepover and it just so happens some malevolent extraterrestrials pop in to turn the night into a real shit show. It’s fine but had the misfortune of following an outright classic. There’s a better wraparound this time out and nothing is really bad just somewhat forgettable but it does feature a masterpiece in Safe Haven.
