The Paranormal Disappearance of Ailyn Jesick (2010) (USA)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Two sisters head back home to the mountains of North Carolina to be with their terminally ill mother. Communications major Ailyn is filming all of it for her “life” thesis and she’s interested in her mom’s holistic treatment for her cancer. Her sister Rose is a nurse and thinks it’s all bullshit, hoping to convince her mother to get back on traditional medicine. Mom is looking pretty good and the reunion is an incredibly happy one at first. The trio of women have a comfortable chemistry to keep everything convincing with Hayley Lovitt completely lovable as the youngest Ailyn and Annie Cook bringing a Dee Wallace vibe in the role of Mom. Rose is having issues with her husband and there’s a past trauma involving the death of the father to add to the drama. A mysterious light coming from an abandoned chicken coop catches the attention of the dude filming everything and that’s when the spookiness begins to creep in. Something is hanging around the rural property and it’s trying to communicate but the more things play out, the more we realize whatever is hanging around probably isn’t peaceful. Mom’s illness progresses and her kind demeanor shifts into unfriendly territory. Did you like The Taking of Deborah Logan? Of course you did, it’s a fucking intense melding of illness, loss and the supernatural and if you don’t pay attention to release dates, you may be thinking this is a dull retread. But, this actually landed first and it has my respect for that. There’s something supernatural going down but there’s a certain sense of acceptable deniability thanks to the mother’s sickness. Logan plays things a bit more complicated and this one kind of just takes a simpler path when it comes to what’s festering beyond the cancer but it really isn’t fair to compare the two. Performances get a little shaky the more complicated and hectic the situation gets but it doesn’t diminish the work that’s been put in.
