Spiral Drive (2020) (USA)

⭐️⭐️

Filming a cross-country road trip with plans to use it as a feature film, two friends with a shaky relationship manage to catch their bizarre encounter with some freaky entity that calls the Appalachian mountains home. Will needs the feature film to land a job in Los Angeles which he thought he already had. That’s why he and Evan (who dreams of being an actor) are on the road trip because they’re moving out that way. The long-ass trip is going to need to be filmed which explains all the cameras. Will does not want to admit he doesn’t really have the guaranteed job, so he makes it seem like he’s doing this for Evan to help him get work. A detour to get some scenic footage from a lookout point starts showing the signs of agitation between the two and nighttime driving through the mountains leads to them getting lost. Cutting through a side road surrounded by woods and a battery on the fritz, eventually has them lost even more. Inexplicably finding dead ends wherever they turn and a GPS voice that warns them of their oncoming death, the two dopes get thrown into a night of high strangeness. The car dies, their phones stop working and desperation sends them out looking for help and into the arms of something beyond human understanding. The protagonists are a chore to deal with and the amateur roots work against it in the performance aspect. Having said that, the filming in the dark woods is atmospheric and paranormal threat nipping at the duos heels is wonderfully realized. If you can manage to deal with the characters we’re stuck with, the intriguing story is well-worth the effort. There’s also one of the most successfully pulled off jokes involving the phrase “Mama Mia” I have ever seen.
