11:23 - 09:59 (Project Angst) (2018) (Switzerland/Germany)

aka 11:23 - 09:59 (About Fear)

⭐️1/2

Six drama students lock themselves in an old, abandoned bunker somewhere in the Swiss Alps to test their courage and hopefully overcome their fears. An opening audio confession from a doctor points to something strange happening to the soldiers who were stationed there back in the early nineties. Something he goes onto explain as completely abnormal. Not long after, the Swiss military sealed off the bunker and kept their reasoning top secret. Of course this is the exact kind of place that would attract some naive theater dorks looking for some spooky fun and harmless competition. They’re let into the underground fort by some creepy old coot that their friend Manu has supposedly told to allow access to the usually off-limits location and capture everything on their camera. It’s no spoiler to say that nobody survived the night and this is the footage discovered of this small group’s last horrifying hours on Earth. They follow the creepy guy through the vast bunker and grow unsettled the deeper they travel with their mute guide. He eventually vanishes when the lights go out, taking the keys with him. He’s left them with a warning that he’d be back in the morning to let them out. When they answer a ringing phone, their friend Manu lets them know he was behind it and to come find him in the kitchen. Well, they don’t know exactly where that is so off they go to stumble around in a place as unfamiliar as it is creepy. They eventually meet up with Manu and get to challenging each other to go be brave in the dark corridors of the place with a horrifying history. There’s tension amongst the friends to add some of that annoying “drama” all of these damn things have before whatever it is that’s lurking below the Swiss countryside begins to pick away at the dopes. Possession? Probably. Spirits? Maybe. Boredom? Definitely. The location is excellent but everything else is just kind of bland and has been played out a few dozen times before. The cast is a bit better than expected, so it has that going for it.
