⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Based on actual events! Sure, Jan. Animal Planet special makes some wonderful bullshit claims and offers up all the scripted proof we need. In the year of our lord 1977, three men on an expedition looking for rare birds in the jungles of Indonesia come to some extremely unfortunate awfulness. One makes it out and after the mangled corpse of a team member is found, Dr. Timothy Darrow (Richard Brake) is charged with double homicide and cannibalism. Darrow maintains his innocence and points the blame at some terrifying unknown species of jungle creature. In 2003 the remains of an unknown hominid species close to Darrow’s description is discovered. In 2013 three rolls of film from the expedition are unearthed. This “documentary” is the story of the ill-fated expedition and the first showing of the footage. Interviews, news footage, reenactments, footage of the expedition our narrator is on to verify what he believes is out there and the scratchy Super 8 footage in question make up the film. Taking the actual discovery of Homo flore-siensis (nicknamed hobbits for their smaller size) that shook the world of anthropology and just running with it to ridiculous lengths… that’s my kind of bullshit. Expertly pieced together and as serious-minded as it needed to be, we also get a solid performance from the ever-reliable Brake. Worth tracking down if it sounds like your kind of way to spend about ninety minutes.
