Good Boy (2025) (USA)

 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finding the best workaround possible in the difficult task of bringing your viewer a likable protagonist who can get away with being an idiot and not just leaving the haunted house… make your lead an adorable pet dog. Boom! Indy is the goodest boy ever and he’s moving into the rural home of his owner Todd’s deceased grandfather. It’s a spur of the moment move by Todd (much to the chagrin of his sister who not only worries about her brother but also thinks the house is definitely haunted) and brought on by a recent stint in the hospital for something that almost killed him. Indy notices something is off immediately and the specter he spots standing menacingly outside of Todd’s car is a dead giveaway that this house ain’t right. Of course, Indy being Indy, his own survival takes a back seat when it comes to protecting the thing he loves the most from an impossible threat of the festering malignancy in the empty house. Old home movies made by grandpa (Larry fuckin’ Fessenden) get watched and fill in the back story and shit gets real spooky real fast. Projections from grandpa’s deceased dog also give Indy a look at what awfulness transpired and lays out some supernatural hints, it’s a story beat that could have been a bit too silly but I thought it added a nice touch of oddness to things… plus, that just means more dogs on the screen. A novel idea works well in the haunted house setting and the actual spectral infestation is creepy as fuck, so it hits the necessary notes for a good and intriguing time.
