⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Five years have passed since the world found out the harsh truth that there are monsters amongst us. Godzilla is one of many Titans, which are beasts who have hidden for centuries but are carefully monitored by the shadowy Monarch organization. Monarch juggles the hard to answer question of what should be done with these things. Should they be destroyed? Can they be destroyed? Exploited? What greater purpose do they serve and what will become of this planet should they wake up? Although, a total apex specimen, it would seem they don’t all bow down to Godzilla. No. There’s something worse and far more dangerous which may not be as naturally occurring as the Titans. Monster Zero, otherwise known as King Ghidorah was recently discovered in Antarctica and, of course, ends up in control and organizes these beasts to cause some major havoc around the world. In the middle of all this is teenage Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown) and her long-separated parents, Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) and Dr. Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler). Her parents are two doctors who invented a device called the ORCA that allows humans to communicate with the Titans. Even before shit hit the fan and hell broke loose on Earth, they decided to destroy the device because it’s probably for the best that humans have nothing close to control over the powerful force that is the Titans. The Russell family lost their son/brother during Godzilla’s 2014 destruction and they’re still feelin the effects of that heavy loss. Papa has distanced himself from humanity, Monarch and monsters and spends his time out in the wilderness, researching wolf pack behavior. Mama has continued working with Monarch and has rebuilt the ORCA under the eye of the organization. The loss of her son and lack of control of the situation definitely had something to do with that but it will also come into play with her own dangerous views about humanity and monsters. This brings us to eco-terrorist Colonel Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) and his band of violent eco-soldiers who have gotten their hands on Emma, Maddie and the ORCA. Colonel Jonah actually wants to “level” the global playing field between humans and Titans through the mass destruction of civilization. This is why he wants the ORCA and it helps that Emma shares his disgust for what humans have done with their time on this rock and how little they seem to give a shit about the future. Jonah is looking for a reboot option and is pretty sure the Titans can do this, it helps that he and his team have access to Monster Zero and if this is the actual alpha Titan, then all will fall under its control. He’s also willing to gamble with every life on the planet to find out. Those best-laid plans are, of course, thrown away when their handle on things slips and King Ghidorah takes the reins, awakening all of the monsters at once. With his daughter and ex kidnapped (more like a “soft” kidnapping) and the ORCA at risk of being manipulated by the wrong person, Monarch scoops up Mark because he knows the ORCA better than anyone besides his wife. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), who continues to stress the importance of these monsters, is amongst the group of officials bringing Mark back into the fold. He and Mark disagree on how to handle the powder keg in the line of fire they have on their hands. Serizawa believes there are benevolent creatures amongst the Titans while Mark is more in line with the destroy them all and call it a day mentality. Welp, to fight a giant three-headed super dragon that breaths electricity and causes destructive storms, you’re going to need a giant dinosaur throwback that breathes fire and is more than apt at kicking serious ass. Let them fight, indeed. Emma has regrets, the Oxygen Destroyer almost ruins humanities chances, Hollow Earth comes into play and Mark is given an unbelievable amount of respect for someone whose job description remains vague. Ziyi Zhang, Sally Hawkins, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford, Aisha Hinds, David Stratham, Joe Morton and fuckin’ CCH Pounder show up in supporting roles, barely allowed room with all the monster action. No. Not complaining. A convoluted plot means very little to me when I’m seeing big-ass creatures destroy things and beat the hell out of each other. It’s a fanboy answer to 2014’s flawed beginning and I’m completely fine with that. Rodan gets to shine, Mothra slays (Queen), Godzilla kicks ass and King Ghidorah… oh my KAIJU GODS! It would have been a perfect film if it worked a little harder on the script but we would have lost the “MONSTAS HIT THINGS!!!!!” vibe but we have Godzilla Minus One if we want the perfect mix of monsters and pathos.
