On a family vacation back in 1999, teenage Dallas manages to capture video of the legendary Loveland Frogman. He’s been spending the years since trying to prove that the cryptid creature exists and not doing much of anything else. Now, he’s bringing his best buddy (and cameraman) Scotty and his friend/one-time-hookup Amy (about to leave for L.A.) along with him to finally prove the existence of the creature. Dallas begins slipping deeper into dangerous mental instability as the pursuit of the proof he needs dwells well within tunnel vision. A great, likable cast and fun plot becomes something else entirely when the film reveals just how much audacity it has up its sleeve and how far it’s willing to take things as the Lovecraftian nightmare is revealed. Not something we would come to expect from a found footage flick. Interviews with colorful locals, warnings to leave once they catch onto things and character development involving people we actually give a damn about fill out the early portions and keep it all interesting. It’s all build for a well done shaky-cam encounter and then a final act that loses its fucking mind. Body horror, telepathy and town secrets will all play their part. The ending may leave a bit to be desired but I thought it worked fine in the whole “this is reality caught on camera” way. Anyways, the planned sequel may solve any issues folks have with it.
