V/H/S (2012) (USA)

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Some garbage humans are hired to burglarize a rundown house and find a tape. They discover and watch a few tapes and that’s where we get our intriguing bits of horror. The tapes eventually prove to be pretty damn dangerous and the group of hired thieves get what’s coming to them in the wraparound segment Tape 56. It’s a found footage anthology so if that style of filmmaking ain’t your cup of tea, don’t even bother with this one. Amateur Night follows a group of drunk college douchebags bringing some bar pickups back to their hotel for a night of secretive amateur porn making thanks to some hidden camera glasses. Bad news for the unlikable bros because one of them girls is far from human and pretty damn efficient at taking out her prey. Convincing asshats meet a fucked-up supernatural predator and it’s pulled off pretty damn successfully. Bonus points for throwing in a monster you don’t see that often. Second Honeymoon is the recording of a couple’s road trip and the nasty fate that befell the boring-ass husband. They get stalked by a young girl who films them as they sleep in their motel room and it’s a little too late for the white-bread dink by the time he figures out what’s going on. It drags a little but it’s kind of necessary for the complete depth of the gut punch to work. In Tuesday the 17th a group of youngsters head out to the woods and it’s revealed the gal taking them there is using them as bait for a slasher that wiped out her friends a year earlier. This ain’t your standard slasher as the supernatural entity causes digital altercations in the camera and appears as visual distortion when caught in the lens. An interesting spin on the familiar subgenre with a fine splash of violence. The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She was Younger is a video chat that takes a turn when a young woman starts losing it in her new apartment and her away-at-college boyfriend witnesses the supernatural shit his girlfriend has been experiencing. Pretty unsettling, with a nice turn and probably the freakiest of the batch. 10/31/98 offers up another group of guys to unknown horrors but these dudes are on their way to a Halloween house party. They get to the big old suburban home and discover some cult activity is at work and all hell is about to break loose. Frantic and fun as fuck, it rightfully ends the anthology (minus the wraparound) on a high note. Not really a bad bit amongst the whole damn thing, stuff may get a little stupid at points but all in all it’s a worthy addition to the found footage library.
