Leaving a bleak past in her rear view, Sarah takes a job as a live-in caretaker for a catatonic old broad on a remote island. Her charge Grace doesn’t do much besides sit and stare out the window ever since her twin sister drowned. The only other soul on the island is a kindly but slightly off (and with a cast this small, it’s obvious he’s up to something) neighbor named Albert. He’s been on the island for a long time and sees Grace as a mother figure. Muffled whispers, moving objects and creepy vibes let us know the otherwise tranquil island isn’t as peaceful as it initially seemed. More concerning, Grace starts moving around when it should be impossible. Albert thinks Sarah may be losing it, Sarah finds some unsettling shit in Albert’s house and there’s something hanging around Grace that isn’t exactly on this side of normal. Sarah pulls out a ridiculously long strand of blonde hair from her throat (more hair than I’ve ever eaten) and then just kind of brushes it off and calls it a night (she is Australian so it’s not outside the realm of plausibility) but the immediate visitation from something that definitely is not Grace spoils her night… or was it all a dream? Even if that was, weird shit is still happening and Sarah (who has dementia in her family history) is worried she may be catching a case of the crazies. There’s a few subtle scares that work and the small cast is a little better than awful but it’s all a bit drab and it really could have used a shot of adrenaline. Minimally intriguing in the opening and then minimally infuriating at the close, it’s middle-ground stuff that eventually shits the bed.
