The Twin (2024) (USA)

aka The Fetch/Hangman

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mental health issues plague Nicholas following the death of his son (stairs and shoelaces, man… they’ll get ya every time). The mental anguish strains his marriage to Charlie (Aleksa Palladino) who has a better handle on managing the tragedy but also recognizes that if there is any chance for she and her husband, he’s gonna have to get his shit in order before any work can be done on their relationship. Things slip into terrifying territory when visions of a sinister doppelgänger may be more supernatural in origin than just a fractured mind fucking with its owner. His enigmatic psychiatrist Dr. Beaumont (fuck yeah, it’s Robert Longstreet and he once again proves he’s a force of fucking nature) attempts to lead Nick through the minefield his life has slipped into but he slowly comes to realize that his patient’s troubled past holds some answers which Nick will have to confront and an entity from Irish folklore is haunting the background of our hero’s psyche. He’s staying at his grandmother’s huge home following his release from a state institution while his wife catches up on work and lets her husband get to getting better. Beaumont will be checking in daily looking after Nick’s progress, continuing their sessions and making sure he’s no longer a threat to himself. Nick protests but he hasn’t got any ground to stand on. Luckily, they manage to forge a solid relationship soon after the doctor lets him know he’s all too familiar with the loss of a child. Progress falters when something malicious begins to make itself known or is Nick spiraling down a dark path? Mental illness, manipulation and the supernatural combine into a modestly creepy flick anchored by three strong performances and some truly striking nightmare images. Logan Donovan carries the heavy lifting as the focal point and avoids a role that could have easily shifted into melodrama while also presenting an unsettling otherness as his twisted mirror image. The unfortunate climactic info dump comes earlier than expected which throws things off just enough and it’s delivered by Robert Longstreet so it’s more acceptable than it has any right to be. Still feels like it wasn’t needed but what the fuck do I know? I don’t have faith in much of the viewing audience either. It’s solid but a little corny and there’s a few minor flaws along with that to keep it from being great but I didn’t regret my time.
