Neon Maniacs (1986) (USA)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Plagued with budget and production problems and a huge gap in filming that lead to some cast members being unavailable, a lot of shit seems to be forgotten, leaving the viewers scratching their heads if they ponder on such things as backstory, motivation and the like... but that just adds to the bizarro charm. “When the world is ruled by violence, and the soul of mankind fades, the children’s path shall be darkened, by the shadows of the Neon Maniacs”... sure. Whatever. That opening narration is pretty much all you’re gonna get for an explanation. A gang of weirdo monsters call a tower of the Golden Gate Bridge home and every so often pop on out to cause some serious shit. A group of teens gets their horny asses murdered by these bridge-dwelling creatures, leaving virgin Natalie the sole survivor. The cops don’t believe her story of a monstrous massacre and the lack of bodies has them leaning towards a prank. Unfortunately for Natalie, the creeps are after the “one that got away” but she has a little help from the shy boy that’s crushin’ on her and a horror-loving girl with filmmaking dreams and a good amount of gumption. There’s a surprising focus on survivor’s guilt, some cool looking creepers, likable leads, a goofy score that hits the butt-jazz and butt-rock demographic and it all comes to a head at a battle of the bands (in which our hero’s band is performing, naturally). It’s rad as fuck if you’re not a stickler for things like sensical storytelling or satisfying answers and conclusions.
