The Phantom of the Convent (1934) (Mexico)

aka The Fantasy of the Monastery

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A young couple and their best buddy get lost in the woods and are led to a supposedly haunted and abandoned convent by some creepy dude and his dog, Shadow. The trio are hesitant to follow but it sure as hell beats freezing to death on the isolated mountain, so the group gets set to bunker down in the creepy building spookily named the Monastery of Silence. They’re shocked to find The Order of Silence still inhabits the joint and they’re invited to spend the night. Eduardo doesn’t trust the monks or the monastery but his wife Cristina and buddy Alfonso are happy to have refuge and seem to be a bit more curious than cautious about their current situation. The monastery seems to change Cristina and she tries to seduce Alfonso right under Eduardo’s nose but a bit of cuckolding turns out to be the least of their problems as the supernatural slowly intrudes on their lives. An uncomfortable dinner with the monks leads to a revelation that some serious evil may have made its way into the holy place and time stops following the rules. The cranky head monk tells the tragic tale of a monk named Rodrigo who came to the monastery to atone for his horrific sins which are paralleling the current situation amongst the trio. Rodrigo eventually turned to the dark arts to take out the man in the way of his lust and was murdered by the Devil after trying to back out on the deal and now the echo of that awful night has stained the damn place. Sins are being replayed, a skeletal monk pops up and everyone learns an important lesson. It’s a moody morality play from Mexico that may feel a bit stuffy but offers enough atmosphere to keep it moving.
