The Asylum (2012) (USA)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A local historian grabs his camera and a few friends to break into an abandoned asylum (sealed off by the government) and scratch an itch that’s been bothering his brain since reading up on the location. He finds out that there’s underground tunnels he and his buddies can use to get into the mysterious place and then document everything they find. Asbestos and transients are the natural threat anyone would face with a forgotten property left to rot in the 1970s but, as anyone who has ever seen a found footage movie can attest to, there’s something much worse hiding in the vast, dark corners of the derelict buildings. The youthful trio march through the underground, chatting about the location’s history and making their way into the creepy-ass place. They follow the sound of footsteps but a locked door prevents them from figuring out who else is hanging around. A shout in the dark points to trouble in their near future and it would appear that a former patient may still be calling the grounds home. One of em gets sick and tensions reach a boiling point because friends always have to turn against each other in these things or at least be completely pissed off at someone they actively socialize with. The creeper in hospital clothes who can seemingly teleport like an 80’s slasher makes everything worse. A creepy setting and capable performances keep things chugging along, the whole thing being just a bit over forty minutes helps it all go down. It’s not really offering up anything new but it’s good enough at working with the old familiar. There’s a bit where one of the crew is caught on camera (immediately ducking behind a wall when he realizes he’s in the line of sight) and our main character draws attention to it and just says to keep on going. That’s charming as hell.
