Son of Ingagi (1940) (USA)

aka House of Horror

⭐️⭐️⭐️

A newlywed couple (Robert and Eleanor) inherit elderly scientist Dr. Helen Jackson’s wealth and spooky house. After a foundry fire puts a sour note on the wedding afterparty (no work for Robert now), the old bag visits the wife and asks why she was invited to their wedding. Eleanor lets her know that she doesn’t believe all the bad shit the town says about the reclusive woman. She lets the new wife know she was friends with her parents who were killed in a tornado when Eleanor was only ten months old. The cranky old bat was in love with the new wife’s father some years back but those feelings were not reciprocated and papa ended up with her friend instead of her. She also brought an ape-man named N’Gina back from Africa during one of her expeditions and she’s keeping the beast on her property. Her no-good brother shows up to demand some of her fortune (20,000 in gold hidden on the property) but after striking a gong in her office, the man-ape appears and scares off the convict. After drinking a potion concocted by the scientist, N’Gina gets violent and unexpectedly kills the old lady. The young couple discover the body and the detective they call in finds it mighty suspicious that Eleanor was left everything by the woman who they didn’t really know. A scuzzy lawyer is also hanging around and trying to get his hands on some gold and the property. He ends up dead after snooping around and banging on the gong which calls forth N’Gina from his dwelling place in the secret basement laboratory. Multiple murders do not exactly make Robert look innocent and has the detective ordered to stay on the premises until everything is figured out. There will be more well-deserved death by monkey-human hands before we get to the happy ending. Creaky silliness works well as a curiosity piece thanks to an all African American cast, a ratty yet unsettling ape-man costume and a couple protagonists you can root for. It’s also only an hour long and I can’t hate that.
