A skeptical reporter for Reveal Magazine moves into the infamous Amityville house because he doesn’t believe there was any supernatural influence on the past tragedies and it’s all been an elaborate hoax. The film opens with him and his assistant exposing a fraudulent medium with a bullshit story about a dead son who never existed within the legendary Long Island home. Seeing a chance to start fresh following a divorce and an unsatisfying career, John Baxter (Tony Roberts) buys the place at a steal from a shady realtor who may have been in cahoots with the conmen he recently exposed. John remains steadfast in his lack of belief even as weird shit begins to unfurl. John’s ex begins to worry about her daughter staying in the house (a concern proven justified when the young lady drowns in the neighboring lake) and John refuses to believe in any supernatural hokum as everyone around him sees the place for the true evil it is. John’s former wife loses her grip on reality following her daughter’s death and John’s parapsychologist colleague Dr. Elliot West (Robert Joy) is brought in to investigate the house and either prove the daughter is still there or there is, in fact, nothing going on. The investigation begins to focus on an old well in the basement that may just be the entrance to hell and the team ends up bringing something nasty into this realm. Lori Laughlin is the ill-fated daughter and Meg Ryan is her pal who has a strange ghost-fucking fantasy. It’s all kind of goofy but still works just as well as the straight-faced original.
