Island of the Burning Damned (1967) (UK)

aka Night of the Big Heat/Island of the Burning Doomed

⭐️⭐️1/2

Your standard cold winter for mainland Britain has not affected the northern island Fara. In fact, said island is scorching in troubling heat. Nobody is quite sure what the hell is causing the heatwave but a visiting scientist believes aliens are to blame. The major concerns of heatstroke and swamp ass take a backseat, when locals begin to lose their lives to… something. Locals drink at the pub, a new smokin’ hawt secretary arrives on the island to assist a local author Jack Callum, Peter Cushing is charming as all hell (of course he is) as the local doctor and Christopher Lee is crankier than usual as the stand-offish scientist. The secretary and the author have a past and Jack may be in big trouble because he never shared his infidelity with his inn-keeper wife. He tells her to leave upon seeing who she is but it doesn’t take long for them to start smooching. There’s a weird buzzing noise that people can’t seem to trace and everything is about as screwy as can be. The phone stops working and televisions are exploding when not just showing static. Lee explains his theory that the island is a landing point for an oncoming invasion and with the alien menace comes the heat. Said heat is also leading to irrational behavior. There’s plenty of sweaty Brits, mildly interesting drama, an unseen villain (until the end and then it just looks like someone threw a lightbulb in the silicates from Island of Terror and called it a day) and not enough time spent with Lee or Cushing. It’s well-acted and has an interesting idea behind it but it still feels like some producers gave Terence Fisher not enough money and told him to make a movie while resting on holiday in the English countryside. Still, Cushing and Lee are there and that’ll always be worth my time.
