⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Virginia runs into her old college friend Bette at the beach, Virginia’s boyfriend Roger invites Bette to join them on their weekend getaway to the Portuguese countryside. When Roger shows more attention to Bette, Virginia jumps off the slow-moving train and decides to spend the night camping in the ruins of an old city. When Roger and Virginia attempt to get the conductor to stop he sees where they currently are and refuses out of pure fear. Virginia is about to find out why the locals avoid the decrepit city like the plague. The village was once home to a satanic virgin-sacrificing group of Templars who were eventually strung up by the villagers and had crows peck out their eyes. Now they return every night as bearded and robed skeletal zombies with a taste for blood, giving us one of the coolest fucking groups of zombies to ever grace the silver screen. Eventually Roger and Bette spend the night on the cursed grounds with the sleazy smuggler the cops are looking at as the prime suspect in Virginia’s murder. There will be plenty of death before the sun rises. The women are beautiful, the men are shitbags, the score is ominous, there’s a vampire subplot that doesn’t really go anywhere besides serving as a fantastic visual within a mannequin factory and the zombies are on fucking horseback. Damn fine film from Armando de Ossorio followed by an equally enjoyable sequel, a stupidly enjoyable third part and a terrific final chapter.
