A vicious pitchfork murder way back at a graduation dance in 1945 plays into the first dance the town of Avalon Bay has had in more than thirty years. A killer decked out in military fatigues (the same thing our psychopath was wearing decades ago) starts knocking off the partying youngsters as likable Pam and her deputy boyfriend attempt to figure out who’s been stalking around the place. Savini’s SFX are top notch, adding to the brutality of the blunt slayings. It’s a simple movie without aspirations to be anything but a mean little slasher flick and it succeeds thoroughly. Farley Granger plays the town sheriff out on his annual fishing trip and Lawrence Tierney rolls around in a wheelchair as the grieving father of the girl killed back in the 40s. The cast isn’t that memorable outside of Deputy Mark’s amazing hair helmet and the sassy fatso night clerk at the motel where the sheriff is staying. Late night graveyard investigations, small town vibes, a scuzzy handyman and a shotgun blast to the cranium all make an appearance.
