Encounters (2012) (USA)

⭐️

Tobi Cortez takes it upon himself to bring some closure to his life by figuring out why his sister was murdered six years ago. The police let the case go cold and the private investigators Tobi hired came up with nothing. The neighbors by his old family cabin have let him know that strange noises are pointing to his sister’s spirit hanging around. So now he’s sure that she won’t be able to rest until her murder is solved and justice is served. Tobi decides to head up to the cabin in Big Bear to try and contact the ghost of his sibling. Naturally, he takes along his skeptical best buddy Steve to document everything and hopefully use the spirit world to solve the crime. Also along for the ride is Tobi’s worried wife Pam and a pair of goofy psychics to assist with channeling the other side. Pam disagrees with Tobi’s obsession and there’s rising tension thanks to her boyfriend’s inability to move on and his continued spiraling outward into an area of ridiculous. The séance doesn’t show any results and Tobi grows frustrated. While they’re all asleep, someone trashes the room where the séance went down and Pam accuses the psychics. Luckily they left the camera rolling and they watch in shock as an unseen force unleashes havoc on the room. It spooks the psychic with how violent it is and she’s not sure it’s Tobi’s sister trying to make contact. Pam and Steve want out and more arguments follow. When the psychic tries to make a hasty exit, they find it impossible to leave. This leads to more shrill screaming matches and stupidity. Poltergeist activity increases, the audio mostly becomes screams and shouts and the ghost of a woman in a wedding dress with her throat slit open shows up. This could have been fun but the characters are so damn irritating it’s hard to look past. There’s more than one quick glimpse of a crew member trying to stay out of sight and it’s a nice charming break from all the assholes bickering. We also see a crew member flicking the light switches on and off and I love that too. So I guess it’s never a good thing when my favorite part of a movie is the team behind the camera fucking things up. But hey, it saves it from the dreaded zero stars.
