Within the Pines (2024) (Australia)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

In an isolated patch of wilderness, a sound recordist loses himself in his work while distancing himself from some emotional

bullshit waiting for him at home. When he catches gunfire with his equipment, he comes across an old caravan hidden away in the middle of the woods and a dangerous man. Managing to avoid getting shot when the armed man realizes someone is snooping around, Sam takes a nasty fall and knocks himself out. He’s disoriented as all hell when he comes to in the dark woods and an attack by a dog does nothing to help calm him down. His phone is broken but his audio equipment is still in working order. That may not do him much good because he’s being tracked by somebody who has no issue getting his hands dirty. Radio chatter of a missing girl points to the fact that it may not be just our protagonist’s life on the line and Sam has a choice to make. The well utilized vastness of the forest adds the right level of atmosphere to the ambient audio design the film wallows in for its slow and steady boil. It’s a slow-going survival thriller with a hero suitably out of his element and a dangerous threat well-prepared for his environment. You can feel it’s a short stretched to feature length at some points but even with all that wandering around the woods, b-roll and brief forays into less than necessary bits, I was still a fan of its measured narrative.
