Hollows Grove (2014) (USA)

S.P.I.T. or Spirit and Paranormal Investigation Team is in its fifth season. S.P.I.T. is a small team of friends who go around filming haunted locations and, with the help of a special effects pro, have managed to carve out some success while faking the hauntings. On their trip to Hollows Grove Orphanage they bring their recently single buddy to shoot behind the scenes footage. It turns out Hollows Grove is the real deal and all of their lives are in jeopardy. Likable characters who actually act like a group of friends (a sad rarity in this subgenre I love) help give this found footage flick a slight edge over many of its brethren. A solid build up with some genuine scares only stumbles somewhat in the climax. Like most things, it depends on how much you're willing to go along with the film's premise. Lance Henriksen shows up in a cameo as the SFX pro.
