Livid (2011) (France)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

On Halloween night three young adults, desperate to escape their current woes, break into a former dance academy in search of a supposed treasure hidden within. Learning of the secret riches from her job as a home-care nurse in training, Lucie is convinced by her boyfriend and his brother to burglarize the now comatose head mistress’ mansion and claim the treasure for themselves. Shit goes south rapidly. Spoiling anything else would be a damn crime. The vastly overrated Don’t Breath borrowed (or stole) the same basic premise but where that film stumbled, Livid offers a few wonderful gut punches. The violence is sparse but intense and the plot never becomes predictable. Great work from the two men behind the brutal Inside. Nods to Susperia, Halloween III and even 2005’s underrated House of Wax make their way into Bustillo and Maury’s beautiful nightmare work.
