Wishing to speak with her deceased mother, Donna and her friends invite her mother’s ex, Count Yorga, to hold a séance. Donna’s friends take it about as seriously as any skeptics would but Donna freaks out when it seems a connection has been made. Calming the hysterical woman down, the count plants a subliminal message in her mind that puts her under his control. Of course, the count is a vampire and he starts doing his vampire thang. First claiming her friend Erica with a bit of blood draining. The group’s blood specialist friend, Dr. Jim, is the first to notice something is up and quickly concludes that Yorga is a vampire. It takes a bit of convincing on his part but eventually he gets his buddies to agree that something supernatural is in the works. Meanwhile, Yorga and his deformed servant make things difficult and Erica’s boyfriend foolishly runs off to find his missing gal all on his lonesome. With the cops not taking the doctor’s warnings with any ounce of seriousness, the doctor and his remaining buddy set out to slay the blood drinker and bring an end to the evil tearing through their group. It’s fun taking the vampire myth and throwing it into the more sensical minded seventies but since the count barely interacts with the outside world the idea feels underutilized. Still, Robert Quarry is great as the cocky old-world monster and makes the movie easily watchable. There’s some cool scenes sprinkled throughout and the downbeat ending is a nice sting.
