Ghost Rig (2003) (UK)

aka The Devil’s Tattoo

⭐️1/2

Youthful activists board an oil rig set to be sunk in the middle of the ocean. The ten dorks (BSG’s Jamie Bamber and GOT’s Rory McCann among them) plan on occupying the eerily abandoned rig (the maintenance crew that is supposed to be aboard is nowhere to be found) and preventing it from becoming a so-called “natural reef”. They’re filming and broadcasting the whole event to get the message out and hopefully get some donations. They wander around the rig for a good-long while, looking for the employees that are supposed to be there but finding nothing but spooky noises and a few rats. People start dying and the team leader is hiding something concerning a rumor about a quarantine on the rig that was kept very hush hush. A spy is discovered among them and they assume he’s been responsible for the death of their teammate and a storm is brewing around the rig which makes leaving by chopper impossible. Something begins to possess the activists and more bodies drop as the evil passes from dope to dope. A corpse and a camera are found in a locked room and the footage on the camera shows that a group of folks on the rig were into occult activity. Lethargic performances and flat camerawork have this bad boy dragging ass, feeling like the whole thing is marching sleepily through molasses. It’s like The Thing but not good.
