Melanie Blaine returns to her backwoods hometown when her estranged father is the primary suspect in a series of grisly murders. Of course, the somewhat loony ex-sheriff ain’t the killer, it’s a malevolent supernatural force that calls the swamplands home. She’s called back home by local sweetheart/dork, Jimmy, who’s harboring a big old crush on her. Melanie left home when she was twelve after her mother passed away and never looked back. Everyone thinks her father is nuts with his stories of a monster in the swamp and the most recent victim’s dad is convinced that Melanie’s papa killed his homecoming-queen daughter and he is thirsty for some vengeance. Jimmy needs Melanie’s help to get her dad out of serious danger and there may also be a little more to Jimmy than meets the eye. The local sheriff tries to keep everyone cool and the crap cgi Swamp Thing ripoff is upping the body count. Bruce Dern adds some class as the accused swamp hermit, Cindy Sampson is an extremely likable lead, the low-budget monster hijinks are pretty damn fun and it’s got a script that puts just a little bit more effort in than usual.
