Significant Other (2022) (USA)
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Camping trips in the remote national forests of the Pacific Northwest never end well. A young couple, one familiar with the hike and the other completely anxious about it, head into the woods which unfortunately have just recently become home to something not of this world. A marriage proposal doesn’t exactly end the way Harry was hoping (at least he wasn’t one of those assholes that does it in front of a bunch of people, pretty much forcing the proposee into discomfort) and things get a little awkward for he and Ruth. The discovery of a mutilated deer covered in some kind of fungus adds some unease and Ruth gets lured into a cave by some luminescent blue goo. Harry finds her staring off into the vast wilderness and they carry on with their hike but Ruth do be acting odd and things are only going to get worse. It sets itself up to be a kind of low-key drama-horror from the out but takes a pleasant detour and gets darkly humorous and just a little weird. Two great leads and a beautiful setting mix well with the familiar story that at least tries to see it from a different perspective. I was hoping for a Wendigo, but I tried not to let that disappointment ruin my time.
