A deep dream state allows subjects to become portals to a parallel dimension and some shady scientists are tinkering around with something that will inevitably bite them on the ass. Portals work both ways and now something terrible has come through and is wreaking havoc on the subterranean laboratory where the experiments are going down. Captain Hickock (David Beecroft who constantly looks like he has to take a dump) arrives to look into the death of a test subject in the facility. Louise Fletcher and James Hong are the two scientists heading the program and see the investigation as an annoyance getting in the way of progress. A sexy scientist has a pet monkey named Bingo and has the hots for Hickock, Spider from Return of the Living Dead has a flattop and an attitude, there’s a maintenance man who looks like me if I were raised by a not-so-loving family in the mountains of Appalachia and goes by the name Tommy Shivers, a naked chick who dreams, a naked man who does the same (he blows up pretty quickly) and a sassy hefty cook who used to run a brothel. The investigator’s digging leads to some limit pushing from the researchers to save their own asses and keep getting that government check but it goes wrong and the evil presence from another reality (who goes by the name John Doe) makes its way out. They’re stuck in the underground facility thanks to the slight radioactivity of their visitor and the lockdown protocol caused by that. It’s like Alien if Alien was trying hard to be any of the cheesy knockoffs that followed in its wake, had a quarter of the budget (Louise Fletcher costs money, ya know) and a director that was uninterested in the material. The same director also made the excellent The Slayer eight years earlier with even less money, so I know he could do better. It’s fine for what it is, it’s just not all that much of anything you haven’t seen before, even by 1990.
