Shock Waves (1977) (USA)
aka Death Corps/Nazi Bloodstorm/Almost Human
A phantom freighter wrecks the already rundown dive ship carting four vacationing folks around the ocean. The crew and customers are forced to seek help on a nearby island but all they can find is an abandoned hotel and a less than accommodating Peter Cushing. Boat captain Carradine takes an early bow and soon some goggled amphibious Nazi zombies begin picking off the stranded bunch. Turns out Cushing was a Nazi scientist who helped create the undead killing machines. Surprisingly atmospheric and featuring some wonderfully realized surrealities (the underwater-shot marching zombie soldiers is a thing of pure nightmare beauty) Shock Waves manages to carve itself out a nice little home in the contemporary horror classics section. I’m sure everyone’s least favorite Germans have been zombified sometime before this late 70s excellence but I doubt they were anywhere near as memorable.
